Amandla Stenberg Comes Out as Gay

Amandla Stenberg has some happy news to share, just in time for Pride Month: “OUT & PROUD,” she wrote on Instagram.

Yep, the Hunger Games actress, 19, confirmed that she’s gay in an interview with Wonderland magazine. Stenberg, who was interviewed by pop musician King Princess (she’s best known for her debut single, “1950,” about queer love) for the piece, said that she “was flooded with a sense of calm and peace” after coming to terms with her sexuality.

Stenberg had already been a role model for the LGBTQ community when she came out as queer live on Teen Vogue‘s Snapchat in 2016, but she is now ready to embrace her identity, fully, as a gay woman. “I was so overcome with this profound sense of relief when I realised that I’m gay—not bi, not pan, but gay—with a romantic love for women,” she said.

Stenberg also addressed past relationships with men, making a point to say that her sexuality is “not a byproduct of my past experiences with men, who I have loved, but rather a part of myself I was born with and love deeply.”

She continued that she had “a few big Gay Sob moments when I realised I was gay,” but added that they were not “mournful sobs, but actually quite the opposite.”

“They were joyful and overwhelmed sobs,” she said. “Socialisation is a bitch and a half and kept me from understanding and living my truth for a while.”
