Dress for success.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been publicly engaged for all of five days, and already they’ve mastered an enviable level of style synergy as a couple. At a visit to the Nottingham Contemporary gallery earlier today, the 30-somethings arrived wearing navy topcoats with black and tan accents underneath. They looked like Burberry runway models, or the rest of us Thanksgiving day, only more attractive. While their outfits were complementary, they didn’t totally match—a very important distinction in looking great as a couple. You’re aiming for David and Victoria Beckham looking casually chic at Fashion Week (see below), not Justin and Britney in double denim at the 2001 AMAs.
The trick is to adopt a similar point of view on style, either for a specific outing (see: style chameleons Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union) or for life in general (see: dusty-hued jersey lovers Kanye West and Kim Kardashian) and then get dressed separately, making your own decisions about what to wear. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s point of view is that of two people who will soon call Kensington Palace home but that doesn’t mean you and your partner can’t take cues from their modern-royal sensibilities. After all, it’s not like they’re wearing capes or anything.
To cop their vibe you’ve got to believe that it’s better be overdressed than underdressed (let’s face it, these fits are more polished than anything your friends are going to roll up to brunch wearing), avoid today’s more-is-more trends like the plague, and invest in time-honored outerwear instead of in-demand footwear. You’ve also got to get ready for the day with more than just a bar of soap and some toothpaste; Prince Harry and Markle are Tom Ford levels of well groomed.
If hot tools and pea coats are not your bag, feel free to find another famous couple to emulate. Or go it alone. Just be prepared: If your partner suddenly goes through a Health Goth phase, in order to maintain your power couple status, you might have to go along for the ride too.
